MIXED MEDIA

PAINTED GLASS

Long before Magic Leap’s flying whale demo, I sought to integrate oil paintings into the background of NYC in this series of large format 4x5 photographs.

After experimenting to find a technique that produced opaque oil paintings on glass, I sourced salvaged window frames with their glass still intact.

PROCESS

After painting a series of six windows (only two broke…), I ordered a custom Z-frame to suspend the windows in air with fishing wire so it appeared borderless in the photographs. For every photograph I wheeled this setup to a target area and positioned the paintings so they blended into background environments.

GOLDEN RATIO

This collection of 4x5 large format photographs are made up of series and individual studies exploring the golden ratio in contrast to more rigid geometry. For this series I procured a biodegradable milk based paint I used on trees and boulders.

Featured photographs from a range of personal projects and series over the years, all with a focus on natural forms.

LITTLE GUYS

Little Guys is a collection of 5x7” mixed-media paintings that bridged the gap between traditional oil painting and digital manipulation.

In each series I start by painting a small canvas with traditional media, usually a mix of oil paint and pastels. After they dry, I scan and continue working on them digitally in Photoshop and Procreate. Finally I then print the blended version on canvas and continue the through the those steps again.

In this recursive process I reiterate over the same altered painting six or more times creating an ambiguity between media and blending the qualities and characteristics of digital and traditional mediums.

RECURSIVE PAINTINGS

Much like Little Guys, these mixed-media figure and landscape paintings combine digital and traditional media. In this process I begin by painting over a printed photograph, then scan and digitally manipulate the image in Photoshop before printing it once more. With every iteration, any depth from brushstrokes flatten into 2D images and the distinctions between mediums breakdown as their qualities blend together.
